A bookworm since the beginning…

I’ve always been a bookworm.  When I was a kid I would read every book in a series and then devour more just as soon as I had completed one.

In fact, my first entrepreneurial venture was selling books in my neighborhood!  I figured that all the books I had finished could find a new home and why not make a little pocket change?

I would sit on top of my big, red-brick mailbox yelling “BOOKS FOR SALE!  BOOKS FOR SALE!”.  I had hauled the books outside in a cardboard box and as customers would come by I would sell the for a quarter or 50 cents.

Books are life-changing

Books have always been a huge part of my life.  When I was younger, I only read fiction.  I enjoyed many genres, but I was mostly drawn to books that had deep character development.  I would get lost in the stories and enjoy the book characters as though they were my friends.

Throughout high school and college I struggled with reading because I didn’t always like the classics.  And I NEVER liked to be told that I had to read something.  On occasion, an assigned book would speak to me (I remember liking Jane Eyre), but most often I would find a short cut or skim the book to get the bare minimum out of it.

But when I found a book I truly loved I would read it for hours on end and soak it up like a warm bath.  Reading wasn’t about escaping, but about learning and adventuring in ways that I didn’t know were possible.

The Book Club Queen

“Reading wasn’t about escaping, but about learning and adventuring in ways that I didn’t know were possible.”

As a young women in my 20s, reading became a way for me to socialize.  I became the “Book Club Queen” and loved participating in and hosting book club meetings.

True, sometimes they were more about social hour and having a glass or 3 of wine, but I also really enjoyed the discussions.  I also loved reading books that someone else picked out so I could expand my repertoire and read outside my comfort zone.

Reading as a save haven

When I went through a major life transformation in my late 30s, reading became a safe haven.  I discovered that there were books that spoke to me on levels that I didn’t know existed.

Books became a way for me to find answers to questions about myself that I didn’t even know I had!  I discovered the genre of self (or personal) development and my love of reading exploded like never before.

In fact, in the work that I do in helping women transform their own lives to one of passion, purpose and living SASSY AF, I am self-taught based on reading more books than I can remember!

Book recommendations for you!

To this day, I love making book recommendations and one of the first questions I ask someone when I meet them for the first time is, “What are you reading right now?”.

While this list is nowhere near complete, I wanted to provide a starting point for a book list that I recommend.  It is my hope that some of these books speak to you in ways that you hadn’t even know you craved.

I also hope that you are inspired to try some new authors, titles or genres and get motivated to fall into your own love affair with books!
